Laser method ‘melts away’ body fat

Tummy tucks could be a thing of the past thanks to a new treatment using lasers to eliminate fat in the body, according to new research.

Combined with the normal liposuction technique, laser lipolysis treatment has all the benefits and none of the risks of surgical procedures such as tummy tucks, it is believed.

A study of more than 2,000 people found that the minimally invasive technique melts away fat and also produces new collagen, the main protein that gives skin texture and tone.

The laser also tightens the skin as it squeezes the collagen, reducing the sagging patients sometimes see after standard liposuction procedures.

Abbas Chamsuddin, lead author of the study and an interventional radiologist at the Center for Laser and Interventional Surgery in the US city of Atlanta, said the fibre-optic laser is directed by ultrasound and can be used on various parts of the body.

The expert told the Society of Interventional Radiology’s 38th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans that when combined with liposuction, laser lipolysis has the ability to shape the body and produce tight skin, allowing people to have tighter abdomens without having to undergo cosmetic surgery.
