People waiting for heart operations will be able to look at how successful their surgeon has been in the past before they agree to go into theatre.
The Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery said patients will be able to access information about how many times their doctor has performed a particular procedure and what the outcomes of the surgery were.
The Blue Book Online website will also give people information about the hospitals where they are scheduled to have their operation.
The website was unveiled by the society at its annual meeting in Brighton. The aim of the initiative is to help patients make informed decisions based on data concerning risk and outcomes.
A spokeswoman said that it would also be a useful website for doctors as it would allow them to see how they were performing in comparison to others.
The society would now like to see data published concerning other types of surgery.
