Online retail sales grew at a faster than expected rate in December, with mobile devices proving particularly popular.
Sales were up 12% on the previous month as Christmas shopping kicked into full swing, while the IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index measured year-on-year growth of 17.5%.
An estimated £78bn was spent at online retail stores in 2012, as sales through mobile devices, including tablets, shot up by a massive 304% on 2011.
While growth levels in the first half of the year for the online retail sector were typically in the low teens, levels in the second half of the year increased to the mid to late teens.
It is this very strong finish that has led to IMRG and Capgemini predicting further growth for the sector in 2013, forecasting a 12% rise in sales over the year to £87bn.
